The house, at Dhurumsalla [in India], in which the Earl of Elgin, Governor-General of India, died, 1864. Engraving from a photograph by Mr. G. D. Lyon. The Earl of Elgin, Viceroy and Governor-General of India, died at Dhurumsalla, on the 20th of November last, and was buried the following day in Dhurumsalla churchyard, "in a sweet spot selected by Lady Elgin herself, at his request"...Lord Elgins last words showed the composure and calmness with which he met death. He received the announcement that his end was at hand from his able physician, Dr. Macrae, with perfect resignation, and shortly afterwards received the sacrament...In the complete possession of all his faculties, and with implicit Christian confidence and trust, moreover, with the tenderest consideration for the feelings and wishes of Lady Elgin, the Viceroy made his will, signed his private papers, and gave particular orders regarding his grave and his funeral.
