Bacchus and Ariadne. 1898 illustration of the Roman god Bacchus (top left) and Ariadne (top right) surrounded by other figures. Bacchus (Dionysus) was the god of the grape harvest, wine and fertility. Ariadne was the daughter of King Minos of Crete and was in charge of the labyrinth where the Minotaur roamed. In some stories Ariadne became the wife of Bacchus.
