Photograph of an unripe seed capsule (fruit) of the field or corn poppy, Papaver rhoeas. The seed capsule comprises the remains of the flower after the petals have fallen; the old stigma (starfish-shaped) is seen at top. When the capsule has fully ripened, mature seeds are released by the organized process of dehiscence (dehydration & splitting. At this time the pericarp, which for the capsule wall, is dead & hard. Pores appear at the very top of the capsule, below the remains of the stigma, through which the seeds are released.
