Lunar rainbow. Historical artwork of a lunar rainbow, or moonbow, over a castle in Compiegne, France. A lunar rainbow is formed by the same process as a normal rainbow, but is illuminated by moonlight rather than sunlight. As moonlight is much fainter than sunlight, the rainbow appears paler and colours are harder to discern. This artwork was published in The Atmosphere by Camille Flammarion, in 1873.
