Katherine Stinson (1891-1977), US aviator, in Tokyo, Japan. Stinson qualified as a pilot in 1912, the fourth woman in the USA to do so. On 18 July 1915, she became the first woman to perform a loop. She carried airmail on her flights, and during World War I she flew to raise money for the ambulance services. She contracted tuberculosis in 1920, and retired from aviation.
