Wheelock steam engine. Diagram of a Wheelock steam engine, seen from the side, showing the valves and gears. This steam engine was invented by the US engineer Jerome Wheelock (1834-1902). Steam passing through the system of valves (lower left) drove the pistons (one at upper left). These were attached to the crankshaft (lower right), turning the motion of the pistons into rotary power to drive a wheel or gears in a machine.
