Ellipsocephalus hoffi trilobite fossils. Trilobites were arthropods that fed as they crawled on the seabed. They are now extinct. This trilobite species was described in 1823 by the German palaeontologist Ernst Friedrich, Baron von Schlotheim (1764-1832). These fossils date from the Middle Cambrian period (500 to 510 million years ago), and were found in the Jince formation of Mount Konicek in the Czech Republic. Each fossil is about 15 millimetres in length. This enhanced computer image is a composite of specimens from a collection maintained by Pete Lawrence.
