Fullerene molecule. Molecular model of the spherical fullerene molecule C180. Fullerenes are structurally distinct forms (allotropes) of carbon. This one has 180 carbon atoms arranged in a spherical structure consisting of interlinking hexagonal and pentagonal rings. The spherical fullerenes are sometimes referred to as buckyballs, after the first such molecule to be discovered (C60, buckminsterfullerene).
