Composting toilet at campsite, Finland. Composting toilet at campsite - on banks of Tornio River, Lapland Many sites visited by tourists in Finland, including weekend houses and campsites are provided with composting (dry) toilets. A composting toilet converts human waste into organic compost, saves water and minimises our impact on the environment. The waste is decomposed by aerobic microbes and this process destructs pathogens (e.g. coliform bacteria) as the waste is further broken down. The resulting organic soil compost can be used as a soil amendment. A composting agent is added to most dry toilets to enhance the composting process and reduce odours. Here, woodchips are used. A normal water closet uses between 5 and 15 litres of water per flush and the waste sewage must be treated in large plants, again using valuable water and electricity resources. This scheme is run by Mets?hallitus, the Finnish forestry commission as part of a project to reduce the impact of tourism on the environment.
