Proteomics. Researcher with an automatic X-ray crystallography machine used to study the structure of proteins. The light track shows the movement of a robot arm as it selects a sample from lower right and places it in position for crystallography at centre left. Crystallography is used to determine the three-dimensional structure of a molecule. The diffraction pattern produced as X-rays pass through a crystal reveal its structure. This work is being done at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories, California, USA. This automated protein crystallisation and crystallo- graphy process is much faster than conventional non-automated methods.
