George Henry Lewes (1817-1878), British writer and philosopher who also contributed to many areas of science, ranging from physiology and anatomy to psychology. His early work, from 1836, was on philosophy, combined with a career as a literary critic in Germany. In 1854 he left his first wife and settled with Miss Evans (the author George Eliot) as her partner. He published Life of Goethe (1855), and then turned to science. Collections of essays include Seaside Studies (1858), Physiology of Common Life (1859), Studies in Animal Life (1862), Aristotle, a Chapter from the History of Science (1864) and The Problems of Life and Mind (1874). This painting by Hader was photographed in Berlin in 1879.
