The nebulizer allows the delivery of a fine spray of a liquid drug into the throat and bronchial tubes. Usually the drugs are corticosteroids or bronchodilators such as salbutamol. An electric or hand operated pump sends a stream of air or oxygen across a chamber containing the required drug. The stream of air disperses the drug, which is then delivered via a face mask to the user. An asthma attack involves bronchospasm, where the bronchial tubes are narrowed due to inflammation and muscle spasm.
