Herpes infection. Light micrograph of a cervical smear showing a cell (red) infected with the herpes simplex virus (HSV), cause of the sexually-transmitted disease (STD) herpes. The infected cell has multiple nuclei that have moulded together and become filled with viral particles. Genital herpes infections are most often due to HSV type 2, rather than HSV type 1. HSV type 2 has been implicated in the development of cervical cancer. Cervical smear tests are routinely performed to look for abnormalities in cells of the cervix, which might indicate the onset of cancer. Magnification: x1150 when printed 10cm wide.
