Spongy bone. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human spongy (cancellous) bone from the shaft of a long bone. Found inside bones, below a dense shell of hard compact bone, it consists of a network of hard bars (trabeculae) separated by interconnected spaces. These are filled with bone marrow, which manufactures blood cells. Magnification: x20 at 6x7cm size.
