Female skeleton. Artwork showing the bones of the female torso based on the Venus de Milo. The backbone (down centre) supports the body, and is composed of block-like vertebrae. The ribcage (upper centre) encloses and protects the heart and lungs (not seen). The pelvis (lower centre) forms the base of the abdominal cavity, and articulates with the upper leg bones (femurs, or femora). The Venus de Milo (or Aphrodite of Melos) is a sculpture of the Goddess of Love, thought to have been carved in around 150 BC during the Ancient Greek period.
