PET scan (positron emission tomography) of an axial section through a normal human brain. PET scans are obtained by injecting a tracer labelled with a short-lived radioactive isotope into the bloodstream, which concentrates in brain & emits positrons that are recorded by a circular detector when the scan is performed. Here, radioactive methionine (an amino acid) has been used to show the level of activity of protein synthesis in the brain.
