Foetal spinal column. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the spine of a foetus. Intervertebral discs (spongy, oval, dark yellow) are sandwiched between vertebrae (lighter yellow), which are themselves connected by a facet joint. The discs are made of fibrous cartilage, and are used for shock absorption, whilst the many vertebrae allow the spine the flexibility to move.
