Power from poultry litter. View of the Fibropower power station at Eye in Suffolk, England. The station is fuelled with poultry litter - a dried mixture of wood shavings, straw and chicken droppings - purchased from local poultry farms. This is burnt to produce a net 12.5 megawatts of electricity. Ash from the furnaces is used as a nitrate-free fertiliser. Emissions of 'greenhouse' gases are about 25% of those of a coal-fired power station of similar output, and 'acid rain' gases (sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides) are well within European Union guidelines.
