False-colour image of Sapas Mons, a volcano on the planet Venus. This image was gathered by the Magellan radar mapping spacecraft in February 1991. Sapas Mons is located in the equatorial Atla Regio and is about 400km across and 1.5km high. At the summit are two radar-dark mesas, table-like structures of hard rock around which other rock has been eroded. Two types of lava are seen, the predominant radar-bright younger and rougher lava around the summit and a radar-dark patch of older, smoother lava toward bottom right. The small circular feature toward the upper right margin of the peak is an impact crater. Atla Regio consists of five such volcanic edifices.
