Star trails. These streaks of light are formed on long-exposure photographs due to the apparent motion of the stars caused by the Earth's rotation. The Aurora Borealis (or northern lights), caused by charged particles from the Sun interacting with the upper atmosphere, is also faintly visible (purple, lower right). Photographed over the rim of Nicola River canyon, British Columbia, Canada.
