Crab Nebula. Optical image of the Crab Nebula (M1, NGC 1952). M1 is the remnant of a supernova explosion observed in 1054AD, and consists mainly of hydrogen gas. It is 6000 light years from Earth in the constellation Taurus. It was named due to its similarity to a crab's claw. Photographed by the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope on Big Island, Hawaii.
