Karl Mobius. Portrait of Karl Mobius (1825-1908), German marine biologist and pioneer of the concept of ecology. Mobius championed the theory of ecology, the concept that the success of each species is dependent upon the success or failure of other species. He initiated a program for studying ecology in 1865 and introduced the concept of a 'life community' in 1877.
