Pyrocystis fusiformis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Pyrocystis fusiformis is a non-motile, tropical, epipelagic (illuminated zone of the sea), marine dinoflagellate, reaching lengths of up to 1 mm. They are especially interesting to scientists because of their bioluminescent nature which is displayed when P. fusiformis is disturbed or agitated. Magnification: x 6000 when printed at 10 centimeteres wide.
