SPACE: EINSTEIN CROSS. The Einstein Cross, a quasar that sits directly behind a cluster of galaxies when viewed from Earth. It appears as four images of the same quasar as a result of gravitational lensing, in which the gravitational pull of the galaxies distorts the light as it travels through. Illustration of this lensing by Dana Berry for NASA, c1990.
