Buddhist world map. Produced in Japan in 1710, 'Nansenbushu Bankoku Shoka No Zu' shows the world from a Buddhist perspective. The world-spanning continent of Jambu-Dvipa is dominated by India (lower centre) with the sacred Mount Meru (whirlpool) left of centre. China is at upper right, the islands of Japan to its right, and South-East Asia at lower right. Other regions of the world are shown much diminished in relative importance. European regions are at top left. South America is the small island at lower right. North America is the area in the top right corner. Africa is one of the islands at far left. The map, with Chinese script, was produced by the Buddhist monk Zuda Rokashi 'Hotan' (1654-1728).
