Milky Way above La Palma, Canary Islands. View of the Milky Way (upper left) emerging from a fading evening twilight above the cloud-filled Caldera de la Taburiente on La Palma, Canary Islands. This 10-kilometre-wide volcanic crater dominates a large part of the island. The caldera formed some 2 million years ago as part of a massive shield volcano. The crater walls tower 2000 metres above the caldera floor. On top of the caldera (visible at right) is the Roque de los Muchachos astronomical observatory (2400 metres). Photographed in January.
