The Broch of Gurness is the best preserved Broch in Orkney, on mainland island. This defensive building was thought to have been constructed between 100 and 200 BC. The central defensive tower or Broch is surrounded by small stone dwellings. Later Pictish houses are also to be found on the same site. The site is also believed to have been used by the Vikings.
