Black magic: pig's heart stuck with nails, after Elworthy. Note that above the projecting nail are the initials MD, the initials of the person who is supposed to have done the overlooking. Some of the locals declared that it was the custom, when a pig died from 'overlooking', to have its heart stuck full of pins and white thorns, and put in the chimney, in the belief that as the heart dried and withered, so would that of the malignant witch.
