Flamingoes transferred to winter quarters at Whipsnade . To avoid the repetition of a previous winter when some flamingoes were frozen into their pond , the keepers at Whipsnade Zoo are early transferring the delicate birds from their outdoor pool to their winter quarters . A few years ago the flamingoes were locked in the ice on their pool after an unexpected cold spell . Any sudden scare would have cause them to snap their frail legs , so that they had to be left to thaw out .
