World ' s fastest military plane demonstrated at Southampton . New machines for the Royal Air Force . The world ' s fastest military planes the ' Spitfire 1 ' , an all metal low wing monoplane and the Vickers ' Wellesley ' , a long range bomber and general purpose aircraft , were demonstrated at the Eastleigh Aerodrome , Southampton . Built for the Royal Air Force by the Supermarine Aviation Works ( Vickers ) Limieted , both machines are equipped with retractable undercarriages . Spitfire 1 , a day and night fighter , is equipped with wing flaps . Both machines are to be on view for the first time at the RAF Pageant at Hendon on June 27 .
