At a meeting here in NAACP Headquarters July 29th are L to R Bayard Rustin, Washington march leader, Jack Grennberg NAACP lawyer, Whitney M Young Jnr, National Urban League executive director, James Farmer National Core Director, Roy Wilkins executive secretary of the NAACP, the Rev Dr Martin Luther King Prseident of hte Southern Christian Leadership Conference, John Lewis Chairman of the Student Non-Violent Co-Ordinating Committee, A Philip Randolph, Head of Negro American Labour Council and Courtney Fox of the student group. Wilkins read a statement signed by himself, King, Young and Randolph asking members of the major civil rights organisations to observe a " broad curtailment if not total moratorium" on all mass demonstrations until after November 3rd Presidential elections. In addition, the statement was critical of Senator Goldwater, accusing him of having injected racism into the campaign. 1st August 1964
