Nangal, India: The site of the Bhakra Dam, on the river Sutlej some eight miles from here in the Punjab has been visited by Prime Minister Pandit Nehru. When completed in 1960 the dam will be the second highest in the world. It will tower 700 feet against the Boulder Dam's 726. The dam will supply both water for irrigation purposes as well as electric power to a great part of Northern India. Wearing a construction helmet, Premier Pandit Nehru views the preliminary work on the dam. On the left is Mr Homi J. Bhabha, India's foremost atomic scientist and head of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission. A by product of a subsidiary plant at the dam will be heavy water for atomic purposes. 26 March 1955
