Dr Thomas Smethurst of London was convicted of " the Richmond poisoning ," the murder of his wife , Isabella Bankes , in a bigamous marriage . He was sentenced to die but because of Dr Alfred Swaine Taylor 's inconclusive evidence of arsenic poisoning he was saved from execution and only served a year in prison for bigamy . 19 August 1859
