Inside Barbara's Palace. Secrets of one of London's most fabulous residences, Winfield House, Regent's Park - formerly the home of Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton - have been thrown open to officers of the United States armed forces and their families, for whom the house is now a club. The three-storey 35-room house, built in the Georgian style, stands in 12.5 acres of Crown-leased land. Construction, started in 1936, was completed in 1937. Barbara Hutton lived in Winfield House with her husband, Count Haugwitz von Reventlow, and their son, Lance, until 1939; she did not live there after her divorce from the Count. In 1946, Miss Hutton offered Winfield House to the US Government as a home for the US Ambassador in London, but owing to the size of the place and the expenses of running it no American ambassador ever occupied it. Now American officers can sample life at the millionaire level amid its spacious luxury. They are allowed to stay there for up to three days at a time.
