Nineteen miners were killed and five others badly burned by an explosion in the Louisa Pit, Stanley, Durham. The five men who were saved owe their lives to 3 heroes who were half a mile away from the seat of the explosion. Although not equipped with gas protection apparatus, the three immediately made their way forward and before they themselves began to suffer from the effects of the gas, brought out 10 miners, including the five survivors of the explosion. Picture shows: the three heroes of the Louisa Pit, pictured with right Dr C.J.B. Fox, the colliery doctor. The men are left to right, Joe Shanley, Harry Robinson and William Younger and pictured after the rescue at the pit yesterday. 23 August 1947
