St. John de Brebeuf (1593 - 1649) Jesuit priest; French missionary at the native peoples of North America. Suffered the torture during an attack Iroquois mission of St. Ignatius among the Hurons; at which place his apostolate with Gabriel Lalemant. Commemoration March 16; liturgical memorial October 19 along with seven other members of the Society of Jesus; who despite having suffered martyrdom at different dates are united in popular devotion and in the Roman martyrology under the name 'Santi Canadian martyrs'. Beatified by Pope Benedict XV June 21; 1925; were canonized by Pope Pius XI June 29; 1930.
