Terazije Fountain (Terazijska Cesma) was built in 1860 to remember the return of prince Milos Obrenovic on the throne. So; it shows the initials "MO".The hotel building originally was named Rossiya Palace and was in ownership of a St Petersburg insurance company with same name. It was one of the major investments of the Russian tzar imperium in Serbia. Before; in 1902; there was a pub at this place called Velika Srbija. Belgrade-based architect Jovan Ilkic (1857 - 1917) won the tender for the building; but his plans were revised; in Russia. The result was a facade in St. Petersburg secession style. Since 1968; the whole builidng is protected. Especially impressive is the upper part of the facade with its decorative majolica relief which glorifies Russia and the presentation of god Neptune as a symbol for Russian maritime power. Opening of the building was on 14th of January; 1908; in presence of Serbian King Peter I Karadordevic. The so called Palata Rossija became the most expensive and most beautiful Russian building in the Balkan states!The first Hotel Moskva was within the Rossiya Palace and offered just 36 rooms. It a well had a 禄Kafana芦; an caf茅 (coffee shop); a tradition which is continued until today by world famous Caf茅 Moskva. After the Russian October Revoultion 1917; the Rossiya insurance company finished; the Belgrade palace was sold to in 1923 to Po拧tanska 拧tedionica; the Serbian bank of the national mail service. In 1938; Serbian National Bank took over. During Wordl War II; the building in 1941 became headquarters of the German Nazi secret service GESTAPO. it was the Gestapo to rename the building Hotel Velika Srbija. In 1944; it was one of the last buildings in Belgrade to be freed. Interesting enough; all silver; art works and golden artefacts had disappeared. After 1945; the re-nationalization of the hotel took place. It became famous as well via Serbian winner of Nobel prize for literature; in 1961; Ivo Andric (1892 - 1975). He h
