Around the underwater parts of the Everglades are cylindrical masses of yellow-green periphyton, a living material that is largely algae, but that also contains perhaps 100 different organisms. Besides being the base of the food web, periphyton provides refuge for fish, seals moisture into the ground during droughts, and actually makes the soil in which the sawgrass grows.
