Sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekeii) aka Marshbuck. Adult drinking. This antelope lives in papyrus swamps and rarely walks on dry land. Sitatunga have specially developed hooves to accomodate swampy ground. They have waterproof coats with white stripes, spots and splotches for camouflage. The males carry twisted horns that are nearly as long as the animal is tall. They are East Africa's only true amphibious antelope. Hunters place snares in their well-traveled paths through the reeds. Overhunting outside protected areas and human destruction of the habitat is causing a rapid decline in their numbers. Range: Central Africa, Kenya to South Africa. Jacksonville Zoo, Florida.
