Sedimentary rocks are characterized by layers, a feature known as bedding. Earth movements can uplift bedded sedimentary rocks, sometimes to very steep angles. The photo shows layers of sediments that were tilted and pushed onto weathered preexisting, flat-lying bedded rocks. Still later, weathering and erosion of the upper portion of the tilted beds was following by deposition of more flat-lying sedimentary layers. The plane separating such noncontiguous layers is called an unconformity. Two unconformities are visible in the photo.
