These pagodas in Bagan, the ancient capital of Myanmar (Burma), are mostly ruins now, with a few exceptions. At the center is the Ananda temple, dating from c. 1090; to its right is Thatbyinnyu temple, the tallest temple at 61 meters, built in the 12th century. The Irrawaddy river can be seen in the background. UNESCO has tried unsuccessfully to designate this area a World Heritage Site.
