Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a multipolar neuron in the mycenteris plexus in the intestinal tract. This multipolar nerve cell has a single long axon while many dendrites branch from the cell body. The dendrites receive nerve impulses and act as sensory receptors for the cell; the cell's reply is then transmitted through the axon. The cell body is thus the site which processes incoming signals, and which produces a nerve response. Neurons of various types exist but all have a similar structure.
