Following a 1962 experiment in which platinum electrodes were used to learn if electrical current would kill bacteria, Dr. Rosenberg discovered the cancer-fighting abilities of Cisplatin (also known as cisplatinum or cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II), or CDDP). Cisplatin was approved by the FDA as a chemotherapy drug in 1978, revolutionizing the treatment of certain cancers.
