The planet Venus (black dot) can be seen crossing the Sun's surface as it rises out of a distant cloud deck over the Atlantic Ocean. Last seen in 1882, a transit of Venus across the face of the Sun is an extremely rare event. The next Venus transit is on June 6, 2012. This image was taken at Nauset Light Beach, Cape Cod National Seashore, Massachusetts.
