The planet Venus (black dot) can be seen crossing the Sun's surface as it rises out of a distant cloud deck over the Atlantic Ocean. Last seen in 1882, a transit of Venus across the face of the Sun is an extremely rare event. The next Venus transit is on June 6, 2012.
