The bright Scutum Star Cloud in the center of the frame dominates this section of the Milky Way. It is home to many of Barnard's dark nebula, and the jewel-like M11, a remarkable open cluster located just to the lower left of the center of the image. The Great Rift in the Milky Way, a gigantic dark molecular cloud which obscures the stars behind it, is seen here in Serpens Cauda in the upper right of the frame.
