Josef Stalin, Georgian-born Soviet communist revolutionary and leader, early 1930s. Born Iosif Vissarionovich Dzugashvili, Stalin (1879-1953) played a prominent role in the Russian Revolution of 1917. He became General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Russian Communist Party in 1922, and after the death of Lenin in 1924, effectively became ruler of the Soviet Union. Stalin's rule saw massive social and economic upheaval.
