Paul Robeson (1898-1976), American bass-baritone singer and actor, also involved in left-wing politics and activism. He campaigned against racism and colonialism, and supported trade unionism, civil rights and socialism. He became a target for anti-Communist campaigners, although it is unclear whether he was ever a member of the Communist Party. Seen here at the centre of a group of five men.
