Sir Ernest Beachcroft Beckwith Towse VC (23 April 1864 ? 21 June 1948) of the Gordon Highlanders, who had gone to the front to work as a staff officer despite being totally blind, the result of this VC action during the Boer War. Captain Towse was a remarkable man. After losing his sight, he worked with wounded soldiers at the front, typing letters among other things. He was chairman of the British and Foreign Blind Association and in 1940, donated his house to the cause to be used as a rehabilitation centre. He also founded the British Wireless For The Blind Fund in 1929 and was a trustee of The Association for Promoting the General Welfare of the Blind (now known as CLARITY), donating ?500 so they could set up a factory making soap.
