Maria Bochkareva (left of centre, 1889-1920), female Russian soldier who formed the Women's Battalion of Death and fought in the First World War. She is seen here with the first women's battalion to leave for the front. They are at St Isaac's Cathedral in Petrograd (St Petersburg), having their banners blessed before their departure. The tall woman behind Bochkareva is the daughter of Admiral Nikolai Skrydlov, who presented the banner to the battalion.
