'Portrait of Admiral Sir John Balchin', (1832). 'Portrait of Admiral Sir John Balchin...In the Kings Arms Inn at Godalming. Created an Admiral 1727 and lost on the Victory 1744'. John Balchen (or Balchin, 1670-1744) was an officer of the British Royal Navy. He died in the shipwreck of the HMS 'Victory' off the Channel Islands during the War of the Austrian Succession. After a painting made c1705 which hung in the King's Arms Hotel in Godalming, Surrey, the town where he was born.
